Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing

I really enjoy this game. It's deceptive, because you think it's going to be this deep involved game, but actually the turns a breezy, the gameplay slick and engaging. Can't wait for more to come.

Preliminary 8 rating after one play. So far I am liking what I see with most everything from the game mechanisms to the colorful artwork and components. The double layer boards are really nice although the dice upgrade tokens are pretty meh. The game is fast paced fun with each player moving about revealing land tiles which add enemies and treasure to the map. The battling is straightforward directly tied to the strengths of your chosen character. You can wound enemies making them weaker for someone else to finish off. After all the heroes take their turns you spend a bit sorting out your collected loot dispersing it amongst the team. This was a fun little time as well since the enemy player can start taking their turn while the heroes are discussing loot options and upgrades. The villain player is much the same but they also can activate every single minion on the map, so heroes that flipped over tiles to reveal more enemies just gives the villain even more to work with on his turn. But at the same time the heroes HAVE to reveal tiles so they can weaken the villain before the final fight. There are loads of different kinds of treasure to equip and they all have interesting and fun mechanics tied to them. As far as one vs many games go this one actually felt FUN playing both sides, primarily because of the crazy abundance of minions the villain controls it never really felt like everyone was just against ME.

Own deluxe variant Top shelf component quality and design. Enough substance in the game for experienced players, but not intimidating for new players. Played this 7 times with my 8 year old son, he's beat me 6 times.
