Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.

I was attracted to this game by the designer, publisher (HiG), the deck building element and the setting, (finally visited Malta). Sadly it has some problems out of the box. I suspect the game was rushed out for an Essen release before it was ready and doesn’t seem to have been properly supported after that point.. I won't belabour the missteps since these have gotten a fair bit of attention. If you're not willing to fix or work through those issues, (using designer variants, some ambiguous rules and removing take that cards, if desired), then this might not be worth your time. Sadly I think these issues have tainted an otherwise good game. For us, we got past those issues and quite enjoy the game. Our first play was with three players and while we enjoyed the experience it went on too long for what it is. Now, having mostly played 2 players, we’ve enjoyed the game more. D'Vallet moved up the track at a better rate, (using 2 player barrel variant), and it had a much better flow to the game! The deck building works well and you can build a nice engine of fulfilling combos. As a hybrid deck building game, this is a better design than some others I’ve seen, especially considering this was one of the first in the recent flood of hybrids. TL:DR, I don't mind this at 2 but there are so many better games out there. I suspect the game at 4 players is fine, (using designer variants).

Deck-building and tableau-building style game that plays well. One of the interesting aspects of this deck-builder is that, once the game end triggers then everyone plays through their deck one more time. So, those with a bigger deck can get more turns.

Very cool, well balanced game. My first two (2-PL) plays ended in ties. Interesting choices to be made, nice end game scenario as well. Liked everything about this game. It's a go-to medium weight Euro.
