Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

Pros: - Creative art direction - Quality components (particularly the acrylic standees) Cons: - Luck-driven tactics - Punishing at times - Certain character combinations do not work well together Personal Note: - Unappealing theme that frequently borrows ideas from occultism

Was really looking forward to this game due to the theme. It may have the looks and a great theme, but that doesn't save it which is a shame. Got about halfway through campaign before quitting. + Theme and art is gorgeous. + The plastic standees look great and store away quite easily. Can also display them if you like. + Even if you fail a scenario the game keeps going without having to start again. + The rituals can be a fun to complete. + Quite easy to set up. - Dice and bindle pulls can make the game too luck based. Can be really frustrating if you need to get a certain result and keep wasting your turn. - Bindle is tiny and can barely get your hand in there. - The old-timey text is hard to read. - Some of the scenarios are very tedious and take any enjoyment and momentum out of play. - The rules constantly change and it's hard to keep up with each fiddly one that comes up. We often forgot about some of them and I don't think we played 100% correctly even through we were trying. - Wish there was more detail in the story and characters as everything is quite vague. - There are so many skill cards and most of them are rubbish. We kept the first few that we got at the beginning for the majority of the game as nothing else was as useful. Not very rewarding after a battle. - There's some things we don't see a point to other than to make the game harder. Why can't I see the skills before I buy them? Why do I have to plan and put all coins on my card before I do anything? - It just feels like the game is trying to screw you over at times. Like you have played it the same way only to be punished later for what you have been doing "right". Just feels unfair. - Fighting the same enemies again isn't as exciting. If you took them out there would only be about 15 levels, but that's still a decent campaign length. Just feels like they are there to pad the game out. - There's too many cards so they don't fit in the inserts properly which causes them to fly everywhere if you don't store it flat. You'd need some bands or bags to prevent this. - It's campaign only.

Theme is EXCELLENT and there are some very clever campaign/story elements to the game. Downside is that we had a lot of rules uncertainty while playing and felt even after playing a few times like we were still regularly looking things up or wondering what exactly different custom rules for the scenario meant.
