Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

We actually played through the entire thing in the playtest and I loved every game of it. Excellent mix of tactics, puzzles and combat. Gorgeous art, shiver-inducing storytelling, frequent references to real-world folklore. In spite of the fact that some of the art is fairly cute, this is a dark game and a hard one, but very fun and rewarding.

5 scenarios in and we’re amped up to finish all of them. The theming is excellent and the variety between the scenarios are good. The production quality is very high. What could be better: the rule book can be better written. The uncertainty of how we should interpret the rules can be a little annoying. Back to the writing, if there’s a 2nd edition, I’d strongly suggest rewriting for clarity and impact.

Vagrantsong is a co-op boss battling game with some interesting chit-pull mechanisms and beautiful aesthetics. It's meant to be played as a campaign and we only played the first scenario. There were some cool things going on but I don't feel like I really did anything in the game. It was over rather quickly and I just didn't get any sense of my character or her abilities. There was enough there for me to want to come back, but I was hoping for a more dynamic experience from the get-go.
