Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

This is an interesting plug-n-play system with cool mechanics, GREAT components, and enough challenge to bring it back to your co-op table. We love how much replayability there is (between the shuffled set up, the various planets available, the mission you choose to pursue, etc.). Often requires a lot of table talk and patience (watch out for Alpha gamers) to reach victory...but when failure is this fun, you just want to try/play again anyway.

I want to like this more. I spent a good amount of money on it, and I painted the minis and everything. I think the idea of the game is great, the writing is amazing, and the production is top notch. It's not a BAD game at all, it's just missing something I can't quite put my finger on that makes other co-op board games feel more fulfilling. Not selling, and it will still get to my table because it IS fun, just, I can't help but wonder about it.

Bit of an odd feeling on first play, I felt like after getting your first 2 breakthroughs, it doesn't really feel like they're useful anymore, same with discoveries. It all just didn't tie together completely. There was also some bad printing errors/typos that really affected things. That being said, I did enjoy the game and found it to be a lighter, more teamwork oriented version of 7th continent, and of course, it'll probably be a much faster alternative to the upcoming ISS Vanguard. I expect the rating to go up once I play again now that I know what is going on.
