Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

The writing, the theme, the variety, the puzzle, the production quality, this game has it all for me. It's perfect in my eyes. Every time I have brought it to the table with people who have never played, they have all loved it, from light gamers to very experienced ones. It's easy to teach and fun to try and master.

Very impressed by this design. What stands out most is how much thought and care went into the production. This was obviously a labor of love, and it shows. The artwork is absolutely stunning and the writing is immersive and charming, not only in the story but also in the very clear, methodical rulebook. The sheer amount of replayability here is mind-blowing: six planets with three missions each, which can themselves all be replayed as much as you want (and mercifully without having to play a campaign!). This is all without mentioning the actual gameplay, which is tense and gripping. There is some randomness while exploring and in the card draws/die rolls, but this game is at its heart an efficiency puzzle: you really have to maximize your time and calculate your actions carefully. Being able to use your Breakthroughs on other players' turns means you are always engaged even when it's not your turn. My only critique is that the open information and largely deterministic gameplay makes this game very, very susceptible to alpha gamers/quarterbacking, which thankfully isn't a problem with us. Rating likely to rise with further plays.

This is an interesting plug-n-play system with cool mechanics, GREAT components, and enough challenge to bring it back to your co-op table. We love how much replayability there is (between the shuffled set up, the various planets available, the mission you choose to pursue, etc.). Often requires a lot of table talk and patience (watch out for Alpha gamers) to reach victory...but when failure is this fun, you just want to try/play again anyway.
