Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Pretty fun. I liked epic duels, and the mixmatch of characters is appealing. I think the game design is still a bit old; I want to like this more than I do.

I had very high hopes for this game. I am a huge fan of the fighting game genre of video games, so I was immediately sold on the idea of Unmatched, i.e. a character driven dueling game. Leading up to its release, I spent a lot of time thinking about Unmatched, reading what others had to say about it, and so on. Sadly, the game fell flat for me. I had expected Fun with a capital F, crazy matchups and flashy moves in every direction. I have no quarrel with slow and methodical games, but that was not exactly what I had in mind when I let [thing=279645]Bruce Lee[/thing] loose against Medusa (an arbitrary example; My experience is not matchup specific). In my opinion, there's really nothing that Unmatched does which another game in my collection doesn't do better. The cardplay pales in comparison to [thing=463]MtG[/thing] and a number of other titles, and when I'm maneuvering around the board I wish that I were playing a system like [thing=14105]Commands & Colors[/thing] instead. Some people will love Unmatched, and to my understanding, the newer characters and sets in the system have gotten more interesting. But I'm out. That being said, the production value is great, and the whole game is beautifully illustrated. If this is your type of game, you're going to enjoy it a lot. All plays logged under [thing=295564]Unmatched: Game System[/thing].
