Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

After one game, we liked it. It flows well but the end was odd for us as our combination of cards could have kept us going until the bag of stones was empty and my husband would have surely won because he could pick one of two tokens and he got extra points for a certain color. We hope end game/scoring will be very different with different cards out.

I wanted to like this game since it is really pretty to look at. Ruins felt overpowered versus stones and delver cards in my limited plays, so I didn't feel like I had incentive to interact with other players. I'll pass if this hits the table again.

Easy to pick up & play with fair amount of strategy and depth. Great "catch-up" mechanics that mitigate any type of "take that" when your ruin is "stolen" by another player.
