The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

November 2022 - 7 - 3 plays (all at 2 player) + Looks awesome with the gears. + Novel take on worker placement incorporating time to make actions more powerful. + Expansion gives asymmetric powers but some definitely seem more powerful/useful than others. Would potentially make sense to house-rule an auction for selection. = Tough decisions, need to plan timing of actions, but for me so far is missing the "fun" feeling. - Only have a few plays at this point so certainly could change, but it seems any strategy needs to include the Chichen Itza gear. I don't typically mind when there is something you can't neglect in a game, but it seems there should be viable strategies focusing on buildings or tech, but the victory points provided by the Chichen Itza gear seems hard to ignore as a main part of any winning strategy. Certainly could be wrong about this with more experience.

Spin the wheel, win a prize! Tzolkin spices up worker placement by utilizing a gimmick of shifting gears to represent the passing of time. It is a fun mechanic to plan out payouts for resources/points, while also minding the eventual balance check of track progress/feeding your workers. Skipping the line of time comes at various costs, although the gear progression also cleverly provides the general value of each resource, so you have an idea of what you are sacrificing for. There is indeed a compelling game here rather than pure toy factor. I do think I have cooled from it after a couple plays. Gameplay begins to feel staider as little changes occur in setup, making the game feel more static. Perhaps the expansion infuses more dynamics to an otherwise solid Euro game.
