Twilight Imperium (Fourth Edition) is a game of galactic conquest in which three to six players take on the role of one of seventeen factions vying for galactic domination through military might, political maneuvering, and economic bargaining. Every faction offers a completely different play experience, but only one may sit upon the throne of Mecatol Rex as the new masters of the galaxy.

Honestly didn't know how someone could take a 4x game and make a board game version but they did and its excellent. Never a dull moment as there is always something to do even during your oppositions turns. Just can't get it to the table enough!

Absolutely stunning upgrade to TI3. As a massive fan of TI3, I can tell that TI4 after 3 plays has become my clear favorite of the two. The box is a sensible shape now, the vacuuform insert really helps this behemoth stay organized, the tiles have been reduced to ONLY the ones that matter and none of that guff from all the expansions in TI3. (I do recommend experiencing a few games with every expansion rule but it wears out its welcome fast if you just want to have a TI3 night and no one wants to sit around for 9-12 hours.) Component quality is all-around an upgrade. No more plucking ships off sprues and finding obvious quality control issues. Now you get every single faction in one box, the trade goods actually make sense now and fix so many problems, the UI/UX has been updated and modernized so this game will age well on your shelf. The ship redesigns are really cool, though there's the occasional dud like Destroyer. The faction abilities appear to have become totally rebalanced to the point that even the Nekro Virus actually won a game! The ship upgrades being separated from the actual tech tree was a good streamlining measure to help players figure out how they should focus. It's so nice to see that the actually good expansions that add value to a play session are all included and unbalanced things like Shock Troops, weird planet systems, Mech Units, leaders, amabassadors, and so on have been omitted. I also love the redesign of the Strategy tiles which significantly improve over the white/black tiles from TI3, which we often had to mix with one another to make a proper and balanced set. They've removed a lot of the bland Action and Political cards though I don't think they went far enough in ripping out everything that could go. Still, it's a major improvement and now "draw an action card" doesn't feel like a waste. Everything in TI4 is a significant improvement. For expansions, I just want to see more colors (Orange/Grey/etc) and some extra tiles that aren't overly impactful or underwhelming so the board can be more than simply using every tile every time. The Political phase is still a bit of a slog but even that has been given a fresh coat of paint and feels like new. There is still some work that could be done here to improve things. Overall, TI4 is an absolutely worth-it game if you want to try a political style 4X experience and an absolutely must-have if you're a fan of TI.
