Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

I love this game! It has so much that I like: rich player interaction and competition (yet not too mean), an interesting theme, cool cards that let you break the rules, and decisions that have consequence.

Only played once so far, but really enjoyed the experience. We played with Dark Alley, but failed to build a decent setup by the end of the game. There’s a lot to like here, though we found the theatre scoring to be very very fiddly. As time has gone on and I’ve had additional plays, it has grown on me more and more. In many ways I would liken this to a Lacerda game. It’s about as complex as Euros get, and it’s similarly difficult to teach, but there’s tons of strategic depth. I think it’s a real winner.

I'm a big fan of "putting on a show" games, but this one is a little underwhelming in the show department. The rest of the game is pretty standard. The art is beautiful; maybe one of the prettiest games I've played.
