Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

This is a game that easy to enjoy with not too many rules and relatively fast game play. Rolling dice and assigning them to take actions is simply fun. Actually, Tiny Epic Galaxies might be one of the more enjoyable civilization dice games, for a time at least. I do fear that after a few plays the game starts to repeat itself too much, since basically all what you do is that you try to create a situation in which all dice are beneficial to you, no matter what you roll. Moreover, you always want to keep some culture in your pocket to make sure you can follow other players in crucial moves. Another thing that might prove repetitive in the long term, is how you win the game. You absolutely must conquer planets, and to conquer planets you need the right rolls. I was a bit disappointed that alternative ways to gain points were rather limited. In practice, all this emphasises the one-dimensionality of winning strategies. In the end, Tiny Epic Galaxies boils down to straightforward racing. I would have liked to see the special actions the planets have to contribute more to the scoring so that you could form completely new strategies on the basis of what is available. Now the planets just provided the major way way to score points with occasional little twists, tiny boosts, or ways to mitigate bad rolls a bit. Mechanically, the game is solid. The only minor "bad" thing is the follow mechanic which slows the game down a bit too much in my opinion. After assigning a die, you have to go around the table asking whether the other players will pass or follow. This is rather frustrating. Anyways, Tiny Epic Galaxies is not a bad game, it just could have been so much more.

Rating based on one play with 4 players. Game length nearly 2 hours. I wouldn't play this again with four and never with 5 players. Far too long for a dice/luck game. I'd try again with 3. Maybe solo is fun. But many, many better games to play with 2 or 4. Surprisingly thinky though. I won by the way.

A good new engine-building dice game in a small box! It packs quite a lot of play into that box. You can choose to invest in out-of-turn play even! Short, satisfying, and interesting choices throughout make this a winner.
