Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Excellent game but my biggest gripe is how hard it is to table. Huge awkward box with long setup and teardown and lengthy, complex teach. This thing is a table hog. I wish they would have ditched this modular board design and just gave us a big old playmat. The game mechanics themself are well done and fun but game length took too long dispite mechanically feeling like it was the proper number of rounds. Played with 5 people. Liked it but not sure if I can ever get it back to the table.

+ Beautiful art and thematic aquatic universe (playing this feels like we are physically at a coastal sea) + World building storybook and immersive gameplay (mechanics plays perfectly like the story it tries to tell) + Area tiles are separated very thematically (as they represent islands) + Unique 2-step worker placement (individual areas + island bonus) + Built in story telling as you play (each character performing stunts and challenges at different arenas) + Amazing box package and inserts (everything has a spot, cards have room to be sleeved) + Asymmetrical player powers and characters + Excellent player skill dials + Has recommendations for first time playthroughs + Has mini-modules to add replayability (advanced challenges, market cards, personal objectives, starting player cards, and monsters) - Long downtime in between turns - Low player interactions (you fight for spots but there isn't any real interactions going on) - Monster attacks are random (can let players get away with ignoring the monster all game until the their final turn) - Relatively long game length but ends abruptly (you only have 12 turns in the entire game) - Snowballing gameplay (players in the lead are likely to stay in the lead with further advantages) - Inserts for the hit tokens don't fit very well (better to store 4 of each in a bag at the card slots) COMPLEXITY RATING = 4/5 DEPTH RATING = 3/5
