Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

A very interesting expansion pack: Italy is an elongated map with lots of competition towards the middle of the board, and it has that cool mechanism of connecting countries to cities. The new elements, though, are where this map shines: the ferry cards can be a great asset, and they help you build those 18 point routes pore easily, and the regions connections at the end can be worth a ton of points. It's a high score number map, and you have to keep that in mind at all times. Japan is probably the best Ticket to Ride map I've ever played. The bullet train can be shared, but there just aren't enough trains to connect everything, so there's definitely a race at the beginning of the game to build those routes (and also to score those bonus points at the end). But other players might be racing to exhaust their 20 trains, and you might end up at a very tight spot. Also, the "zoomed" regions are really cool.

Japan is a great map. I love the need to contribute to the bullet train and balancing that with your own personal goals.

Fun to have a change of setting with a few different rules, but overall the bullet trains and ferries don't add enough to the mechanism to make it a go-to.
