2 - 4 Players

Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Well-produced. The engine-building is so short-lived that there's almost no point. Seems too complicated for a short game or not complicated enough for a longer one.

Some people are panning this for being a Stone Age clone, without regard for the tile drafting and arrangement on your personal board which can make up a bulk of the scoring, but it's family-friendly light worker placement, so it can't be as fun as Stone Age, because Stone Age has a leather dice cup! A leather dice cup!

Played a lot with my family, fits in nicely at 30 to 40 minutes. Although it might not seem so at first, The River is effectively a race game. You can try to complete five buildings or 12 terrain tiles to force the game end and win (probably). Vital to keep an eye on how close opponents are getting to ending the game. Can you risk a bit more engine building, or should you go for an immediate scoring opportunity before it's too late? Very accessible and not pretending to be anything it isn't.
