The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

More a correction from the original game than an expansion. With only the cards from the original one and the expansion you can play it. More a rework than an expansion
ajewo
Essential expansion for The Expanse. It replaces components: a vibrant looking board, bigger tokens, and five modules that increases the replayability and variety without adding much complexity. Especially the Protomolecule and Technology module are great. 1. Technology module: you can now customize your faction which increases asymmetry and variety. 2. Protomolecule: comes with a standee that represents a hot spot on the board that provides additional scoring, but it’s also at risk of devouring the base when there is a tie. 3. Variable setup: nice to have 4. Resource tokens: sort-of-wild chits are earned by controlling locations whose resources are desired by your faction. It changes things up by offering tactical flexibility with a new resource but also adds complexity. Reduces the tension of the game’s most important decisions what card to pick. 5. Leaders: travel like fleets and add influence. Leaders are paired with power plays, tokens that let you gain points based on whichever sector your leader is in, but only playable a few times per game. Results in a longer game because players try to maximize their points in each of the inner, belt, and outer planets by skipping turns for the sake of power plays. Note: Content of the base game and expansion fits into the main or expansion box

Improves the base game in some ways, especially via techs and the protomolecule. The other modules aren't quite as compelling. Read my review here: https://spacebiff.com/2019/04/13/the-expanse-2/
