The Expanse Board Game
60m - 60m
2 - 4 Players
Ages 14+
The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.
Take That
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Highly confrontational, easy to learn game of area control. Mixes El Grande with the COIN mechanisms. Might be best with 4, because with 3 it's hard to balance your efforts and there is a risk of king-making. 60 minute playing time is a bit optimistic, double that unless you're really experienced.

After quite enjoying Fog of War, I was curious to give this a try. I kind of like The Expanse TV show in a casual way, although I thought the books weren’t great. I have pretty mixed feelings about the games he’s riffing on here (Twilight Struggle and COIN). So that’s not exactly a super-solid foundation on which to build, but it’s not nothing. I think what this does right is that it has a quick and easy pace of play, with a nice escalating arc. Both COIN and Twilight Struggle are, for me, absolutely murdered by their play length and sometimes tedious pacing, This moves at a brisk clip and with some momentum. The play time of 90-120 minutes is pushing it but reasonable, it would have been so easy to make this egregiously overlong (see: almost every COIN game). The system is much cleaner and more intuitive that Twilight Struggle. The 4-player assymetry isn’t spectacular but is nice. The event preemption model works rather nicely, and I actually find the core card/activation engine superior to the COIN system in a number of ways. The actual gameplay though is pretty uninspired. It’s just an area control euro without enough constraints to be anything more than a pick-on-who-you-think-is-winning game. Like COIN, it’s basically a less-well-functioning El Grande. El Grande really nailed this problem, and you really want to look at how it works and what it did right if you’re going to tackle this sort of game. This is just too random, in that it doesn’t give you the personal motivation to do anything other than pick on the winner, which makes for a kind of pointless-feeling game. The themaitc tie-in is actually ok, but it can’t make up for the underlying weakness of the game.

A bit like Twilight struggle in space. I really like the game mechanisms and when spiced up with a very strong theme and ballanced asymetry, this is a really good game. Sleves needed though as Wizkids quality is horrible.
