Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.
Storytelling
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement

Game have good ideas, that could have made a great game, if only GG had play tested it. A few examples that could have been picked up after one play. The token for island exploration should be drawn from a bag instead of reshuffling them on the island everytime there is an expedition. The last act is anticlimactic as you can sell all upgrade in your ship and just buy the clues you need. The traits of sailor cards are poorly laid out on the card, the explanation of the trait should be below the name of the trait so that it is visible when put below the character board The mirror stories with opposite outcomes for the same decision make all decision meaningless. You just have a 50/50 to get the positive outcome. You might as well throw a dice. Game takes up to 6 hours if you play 4 player on 4 acts. And the snowballs nature of the design choice made me loose interest in the game as it progress

Already played it a few times and wow! What a unique game. Great theme, great mechanics. If some people hate the game or the developer to "take time and postpone the delivery a few years" I do not mind. Every creative product needs iterations and if they felt like not rushing it, but provide the best experience they could make it, I rather wait then have a game I waited and invested but is shallow and lame. So... make up your own mind and do not rate the game based on how angry you are :D I will provide a more nuanced review when I have more session under my belt, but the exploration, ship management and story elements are really really well done.
