Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

COB is a pretty solid game. I like a lot of what this version does - adding the recessed player boards that get a map inserted, and the tiles having the rules on the back side. I don't care about the miniatures.

Perfection in a board game right here. One of the best games ever created, and the production quality on this version is top notch.

--New Version review-- All of the below comments are still true for me and the art is so much nicer and this new edition gives a never before seen expansion (vineyards) which adds a neat new element to gameplay. --Old version review-- This is my go-to Feld game by a long-shot. The gameplay is tight and fun despite the artwork being outdated by today's standards. I sometimes think someone will run away with the game, but every time it is relatively close in points. Overall, this is a solid game that people should own/try out at least once.
