Good game, but not good enough to keep. Perhaps a case of the designer's previous work (Arboretum) outshining this.

Really clever, asymetric card game for two players. Love how a fundamentally abstract game feels thematic by how differently the two sides play.

Card Game 2 players only $11 Amazon In this game there’s a noticeable shift in tension as the game progresses. Early on, the game feels like it is in Jack’s favor because options are plentiful for Jack to climb up the various beanstalks and collect treasures. Beanstalk cards are numbered 1 - 9, and Jack needs to create beanstalks with cards in ascending order to have a valid beanstalk. As the game progresses, and as beanstalk cards become more scarce, you feel like the Giant is rearing his ugly head and is starting to become successful at preventing the thieving Jack from stealing his stuff. There’s a point at which the balance between Jack and the Giant just feels like tit for tat and when pivotal moves could push the game in favor of either Jack or the Giant. Blood of an Englishman is a great compact game for travel gaming and is a stand-up game for two players. My normal complaint about two player strategy games is that they don’t feel like they last long enough or that the strategy isn’t terribly interesting. Not so in Blood of an Englishman. The game design and mechanics work such that the game is almost constantly changing and the tension to not make. mistake on your next move is there because like the fairy tale, any one wrong move can cost either side the game! I would highly recommend Blood of an Englishman if you: Enjoy chess-like games by planning several moves ahead Enjoy two player games Enjoy great artwork Enjoy take that style games
