This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.

This was fun. Lots of tension in competing for resources with the dice. The final round felt a bit like an anti-climax, for some reason. Not sure if it was just that play, or the end-game tension was just off. Will have to play it again to see.
Born-of-Ashes
Great dice placement system where low numbers get less resources but are guaranteed while higher dice get more but only from what is left over. The rest is fairly standard VP conversion. The different workers are there, but not really that noticeable.

I really enjoy the setting of this game and how useful all of the dice become, whether you roll low or high. But there are a lot of options, and almost as many dice as there are turns. This means you need a solid strategy early on or you will easily spend all of your available actions before you realize the turn is over.
