In Teotihuacan: City of Gods, each player commands a force of worker dice, which grow in strength with every move. On your turn, you move a worker around a modular board, always choosing one of two areas of the location tile you land on: one offering you an action (and a worker upgrade), the other providing you with a powerful bonus (but without an upgrade).

This game has a unique history with me. From time to time, i buy a new game and do not find it fun at all the first time or two (burgundy, newton, Rollforthegalaxy) but before long it becomes one of my favorite games. This is not that story. This is a game where i watched several videos and said “nope, not for me. Ill pass. Doesnt look fun AT ALL”. Then one day i found myself with some extra cash and went to the store to pick up a new game. The games i really wanted were $80-90 dollars. I noticed this game was only $50. I knew Teotihuacan had beautiful art. I knew it was receiving good reviews across the board. I knew it had a 3D pyramid and i am a sucker for building 3D objects in my euros (i love burano). I made a crazy impulse buy and picked this one up. That night i read the rulebook and before it even hit the table, i knew i was gonna love it. Why do i rate it a ten? I feel this game above all others has taken setup variability to a new level. I was already a sucker for setup variability to begin with. Also, this is tracks done right. A small pet peeve of mine is when you go up a track one space and get nothing (looking at you mombasa, euphoria, tzolkin, and even kahnban). Its not a dealbreaker, but its always felt anticlimactic and abstract to me. This game has the best tracks i have ever seen. Tracks are getting SERIOUSLY played out as the years go by, and i beleive this game has set a new minimum standard for tracks that all new games need to adhere to. Finally, they went the extra step for two players, just like tzolkin did, and gummed up the board with dummies. I love this. Im getting SO sick of games that dont this, and two player matches feel like your in a cave going “HALLLLOOOOOO........is anybody out there!!?!?” The only negative at all is......my god.....this thing has fiddly little rules. We must have played six times before we remembered them all and had a perfect game (speeding up time when a baby is born, advancing on avenue when a worker dies, etc.). This is an important game for everyone to play at least once. It has polarized one of my game groups a bit: we have a guy that hates it so much he will never play again. However, THIS is a game that you just cannot tell how fun and amazing it is just from watching youtube.

Too fidly. I like many mechanigs on the game but the whole picture is just too fiddly. There is too much bookkeeping that is easilly forgotten. It is too easy to play multiple rules wrong by just forgotting to do things.
