Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.

Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Tash-Kalar is always a fun time during play but it feels a bit hard to get to the table due to its abstract nature. I own a lot of content for it & I want to organize a small 1v1 tournament for it with 3 other people to get a better feel of the game.

Way too abstract for my tastes. I really liked the artwork but when the game starts it all goes away and you are left with a chess like board. I also think that for an abstract game, Tash-Kalar has too much randomness (in the card drawing part of the game) and too much chaos if you are playing with 3 or 4 players. Maybe with repeated plays things will be more controllable.

This Game plays VERY well. The mechanics work very well. Next plays a try the high form mode. Update: my copy with both expansions Update: a few days ago i finally play with both expansions and in the high form mode. This game is a masterpiece in abstract games. The Nether faction plays so different, but causes a lot of damage in the enemy forces. The "cold guys" plays very weel too, but my favorites still the barbarians. They plays fast, strike hard and have great unitys.
