Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

One of the games I completely suck at, but still feel they have great potential and I just need one more game to master it. Really a 2p only game though. Can't imagine me playing this IRL.

And now for your gaming pleasure, Vlaada with an abstract! The whole game is an abstract in fantasy clothing. Which is fine. Except it plays like an abstract, feels like an abstract, and burns brains like an abstract. Which works if you want to play a long abstract, but that's not my cup o' tea. Too long, too slow, too brain-numbing for me. And I don't usually mind brain-numbing, but this one is not doing it for me. You can make whatever plans you want -- they're probably D.O.A. by the time it gets back to your turn. And why do I suspect that part of the challenge will be recognizing when your hand is crap and you should pitch it? That's not a skill I feel I need to develop. Nope, an excellent abstract but very much not for me. I've rated it as highly as I have (6) because it's a really solid, well done game. (Really!) If I liked abstracts, I'd be all over this like a teenager at a Justin Bieber concert (sorry, that's the analogy I'm going with), but I don't like most abstracts and this one just isn't my bag. Ah well.

An exceptionally deep strategy game that stretches your spatial thinking to the limits! Great how you can set up super moves several turns in the future, all the time hoping your opponent isn't doing the same or something to ruin your plans
