Tammany Hall
90m - 90m
2 - 5 Players
Ages 12+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding

A good game, once you get into the nuance. But I've had a hard time selling the theme and getting it to the table.

Runaway leader w/ our first game. However, we definitely played it wrong. Must embrace conflict next time.

A bare knuckle fight of an area control game. Tammany Hall brings a good flavour of 19th Century New York politics, with players slandering each other and vying for the support of four different immigrant populations. A nice balancing element is that the player who wins the most wards in a once every four turns election becomes the mayor and must allocate jobs to all of his opponents. The special powers of those jobs will then be used to whittle away at the mayor's on board position. I really like Tammany Hall as a three-player game, but would avoid playing again with five as there is a bit too much down time. The five player game also raises my one complaint with an otherwise very handsome second edition; the choice of brown and purple as player colours.
