Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.
Storytelling

If there is one thing I repeatedly argue about with the Other Player, it is the inability of certain board games to actually tell the story they are trying to sell. Well, here comes the King of all story telling games that all others will have to compare themselves to. Playing Tales is as beautiful as the eyes of Sheherazade, as exciting as a trip on Aladdins magic carpet, as mystical as the dark grove in Sindbads adventures. While playing, you can easily forget that it is indeed not a cooperative game. You may actually forget you're playing a board game. Tales is much more like a friendly introduction to role playing games. If there is on tiny thing I would wish for if a magical Genie turned up and asked me about my whishes, I would ... naturally speak to him about something entirely unrelated to board games. But if, say, the designer of Tales 2.0 climbed out of that lamp, I would probably ask him for a digital version of the story book, because shuffling through the pages all the time really gets annoying after a while. But really, this feels like complaining about the color of the fabric after someone gave you a flying carpet for Christmas.

Just one solo play, so missed out on someone fleshing out the descriptions with flavour. Far less decisions than I was expecting. Its a sit back and enjoy the ride (or not) game. By the end I was sex-changed, crippled and On Pilgramige, so not going to win any time soon. Not that it is about winning. Not really sure its my type of game, but will try it again with someone else.

I picked this up a bit before the pandemic hit, so I haven't been able to get it to the table yet, except a learning game solo. Strict adherence to the BGG rating scale means this should be a 1 since arguing this is a game is akin to saying there is strategy in Snakes and Ladders because you can choose to roll the dice with one or both hands. With the right mentality and the right group, I could see this being fun. 7 is a provisional rating until I can play it for real.
