Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

2021-03: Wow a new 10. I have several 10s, but that is out of 100s of games. This one definitely deserves it though. I have been looking for (and at times attempting to design) my grail MOBA game (see my review if you want to understand why I consider this a MOBA) and I found it here. I honestly cannot conceive of a game in this genre that I could like more, or even as much. This is one of 2 or 3 games I have ever played that have a real chance of subverting BattleCON as my favorite game of all time. Ongoing support for the game will have a lot of impact on whether this score holds or drops, because I want to see WAY more content than currently exists for it to have a chance to stay evergreen (see my BattleCON Unlimited set that just arrived), but if it does I suspect this will stay a very special game for me for a very long time.

Pick three characters, grab their cards and duek it out with an opponent for damage and positioning. Sounds fun, right? It is, but there are some warts on the experience. The deck nature of the game means you can end up disadvantaged by poor draws, which the game attempts to limit through its "plan" system, but this doesn't always work as intended. The bigger issue is that there are some REALLY noticable power imbalances in the character roster; some characters are simply straight up worse than otheres and you could be at a disadvantage from even before you put a figure on the board. Yes, the game encourages a draft to help this out, but unless you *know* which are the good and bad characters through experience, this doesn't help. It also means that you simply never want to use particular characters because there are other options that are just objectively stronger. That said, these problems don't negate the reality that SFB is a snappy two player skirmish game that doesn't outstay its welcome. You'll get to the end and ask "How about one more?", and before you know it, you've had multiple games over the course of a couple of hours.

Underworlds without dices. I still have to read all the cards to be able to make each move, I would prefer to invest that time in elaborating my play, through cards with only iconography.
