This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

2019/03/01 - 1 play @ 5p A very good "epic" game of empire building, with area majority, investment in techs and the usual loan shenanigans of Wallace's games. The hook of the game is the alliance mechanic. The game is made of a succession of three Wars. At the start of a War you bid for turn order, but also for the composition of the two Alliances that will fight. You don't bid only for your faction, but for all of them. This auction really makes the game and elevates it to something special. So much to consider : "I need to be allied with this faction, to prevent it from shredding my empire, while avoiding ending up on a weak Alliance, or being the weaker player in an Alliance and targeted by the other alliance for points, or falling back to much on turn order, etc..." delighfully excruciating! Great game, but it takes a long time to play (5 hours at 5 players in our play).

An older strategic, area control, euro war game with bidding for alliances by Martin Wallace (A Study in Emerald, Wildlands, AuZtralia, Railways of the World). The game has a very interesting alliance system using bidding. It is a very competitive game with loads of negotiation. Pros: + Theme (historic, slavery, colonization) + Random set-up creates high replayability + Risk-like unit area control + Fluid alliances that promote negotiation, players bid to form the alliance which may lead to forced alliances. + Managing unrest and native people + Dice based battles that are not devastating if you lose + Tiles provide various actions and create a lot of depth Neutrals: # Best with high player counts (minimum 5 players) Cons: - Long playing time (the deluxe edition streamlines the game which makes the game shorter: about 30 minutes per player) - Rules are written in such a way that they make it difficult to learn the game. One of the best games ever. I really like the fact that everything is open and you have several options at the start (going for colonies, concentrating in Europe, which tiles to purchase). The unrest system works well, and keeps the game exciting to the very end. There is a good mix of luck and skill involved.
