Stroganov (Kickstarter – Deluxe Edition)
90m - 90m
1 - 4 Players
Ages 12+
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Stroganov per se isn't a bad game from my point of view. I think it's actually quite good. But what pushed this game so down for me is the playing time and the analysis paralysis that can haunt everybody in this one. In a 4-player game I played two rounds of explorers between my turns and still could think about my turns and I did mine in 0.5-2 minutes. The whole game took 2h45. At two it still took 1h30 which both are in my point of view too long for what I get out of this one.

Lovely coat of paint, with a lot of fiddle and mechanics. This game is going to appeal to some people; and more power to you if it does. I’m just not one of them. Hansa Teutonica is still Andreas Steding’s best work. Pros: + Lovely artwork. All landscape Tiles are unique. + Nice premise; explore Siberia, then come back and make songs about your adventures. Delightful. + Wooden components are lovely. Neutrals: # For a 90min game, almost too much setup/tear down. Cons: - Iconography is confusing and unintuitive. - Turn structure is convoluted. For example, these are the steps of a players turn; 1) move 1-2 spaces, 2) take 1 basic action (but you can pay to hunt a second time), 3) perform 1 main action which is either a basic action or an advanced action, but if you pay fur you can do a SECOND basic or advanced action. And I haven’t included exceptions. - Very AP prone. This is either due to new player confusion, or too many options for experienced gamers. - Due to the AP and downtime, max I’d play with is 3-players. - Component quality. This is deluxe??? *looks at board/tokens/cards* maybe compared to Terraforming Mars? - Gameplay flow is not fluid. There’s too much stop/start. Eg. Winter happens. Move your worker. Resolve Story track. (So people picking and choosing). Refresh the landscape tiles, song tiles, yurt tiles, Tsar wish cards. Advance season. Move workers back to start. It breaks the flow of the game. Like I said at the start, a very pretty game but not for me.

This is a fine and pleasant game, with a well-seasonsed point salad, and some unfortunate edge cases in the rules, as we found. I will usually be willing to play this.
