Stroganov (Kickstarter – Deluxe Edition)
90m - 90m
1 - 4 Players
Ages 12+
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Be a Cossack and hunt for the worthiest furs at 16th century Siberia. To choose this thematic setting (Russia, of all countries! Killing of animals as trophies! Even Siberian Tigers (on the most reddish of all possible lists) are not spared!) might not be the wisest decision. But as a game it works, and it´s historic, about five hundred years ago. So let´s go, give it a chance: Gameplay is determined by Worker Placement and Set collection (Furs, Landscape Tiles) over four years (rounds), each year split up in four seasons (turns). A lot of planning is necessary to fulfil Objectives (Tsar´s Wishes), with that generate a Round-Income, start and enhance your Engine Building. Visit Villages, use a Yurt, build an Outpost or make progress on the Trophy Track of your Player Board (Asymmetric Boards available). Shortages wherever you look, they dictate your gameplay and tactics. To optimize this puzzle of options is very demanding, but -surprise- whenever your are bemoaning your fate, there is a way out, new pathways open up and with a clever turn you´re back on the track. Feels just great! What brings us to the overall mood or atmosphere of "Stroganov". Everything is outshined by the game´s sheer presence on the table and its outstanding artwork. It is a pleasure to travel (move your Cossack-Meeple) through these beautiful landscape-depictions. This game is not about killing, first and foremost it´s about travelling. For me this feels irresistible, not always, but sometimes. And then, "Stroganov" is exactly the right brainburner. Solo-modus excellent. (Deluxe edition, very nice components, good rulebook)

Upon seeing this game, I was immediately drawn to it because of its art and gorgeous table presence. I was somewhat hesitant to grab a copy because of the mixed reviews, but, basing off of my good experience with Steding’s previous title, Gugong, and how it got us into the world of eurogames, I knew I had to see for myself. I’m glad I did. ???? I have heard reviews about the game being AP-inducing and the downtime being terrible, so I came in prepared with those expectations. It wasn’t actually bad in our case as you’ll also be busy planning ahead on another players’ turn. I would highly suggest keeping the max no. Of players up to only 3 for it to not drag though. The art was brilliantly done, and the gameplay experience, nothing short of great. ???? There are a couple of paths to victory in Stroganov, and you have to stick to your strategy if you want to gain huge points, as most of the mechanics revolve around set collection. The iconography got a bit too confusing at times, thankfully, the game in itself is not overly complex and fiddly, that it wasn’t a chore to figure out what’s going on. Overall, I think this is a lovely euro that’s atleast worth a try. In my opinion, this should be rated higher. However, this game needs a major production overhaul, as I just can’t get over how a game like this gets presented in a terribly cheap way.
