Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
In games with a trading mechanic, the players can exchange game items between each other.
Trading
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

We tried to get into this and the game was still good but with two players the trade goods didn't seem to work for us. Maybe we didn't do it right? We hardly ever use these expansion rules.

I had the RGG "Style is the Goal" version. This expansion originally came with the following elements: 1) Pieces for a 5th player (in black) 2) Additional wooden tokens in the 4 different resource types (to theoretically cover the possibility of running out of resources in the game if all 5 players were hoarding...never happens, but anyway...) 3) A small board which was to be placed over a portion of the original board, thereby creating a new hut space for jewelry making. 4) New wooden jewelry tokens in 2 types 5) New cards & huts which feature the new jewelry resource & mechanics being introduced--these were designed to be shuffled in with the existing cards & huts, not to replace them. 6) A mini promo expansion that had been previously released by RGG called "the huts expansion". 6 huts, I think? They were also in the BGG store for a while I believe. NOTE: I kept items 1, 2 and 6. Sold the rest & the box/rules. I made up my own 5th player variant. I also kept the "outhouse" hut--which, together with the "huts expansion", allows me to make a 5th player's stack of huts.

Disclaimer: I am acknowledged as one of the contributors of this game's design. Excellent supplement to an already fine game; adding a fifth player and something new to collect.
