This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
In-game money is bet on different commodities in hope that that particular commodity will become the most valuable as the game progresses. Often the values of the commodities are continually changing throughout the game, and the players buy and sell the commodities to make money off of their investment.
Commodity Speculation
In games with a trading mechanic, the players can exchange game items between each other.

Needs at least 5+ players to work even remotely well, but too much about the game encourages degenerate play. The auction phases are fun, but during price setting, one stubborn or obnoxious player can really sink the game for everyone. It's just too repetitve and simply not fun if each round, every good is devalued to its minimum amount. I can't see myself wanting to play this again, although considering the game it's based on is ranked in the 13,000s I guess I'm not alone. I'm wondering why they reprinted this at all.

Great game with Trek fans; the Ferengi is such a perfect fit. Set prices on goods with others, but then decide when to betray and undercut each other. The only con is that it's better with more people.

"This game is an extremely solid economy game, with lots of opportunity for the kind of crafty wheeling and dealing you expect from the genre. Sometimes it feels like Catan, other times like Pit, but anyone who likes to yell and make deals are going to have fun with this." https://www.thefandomentals.com/star-trek-galactic-enterprises-can-bring-out-the-ferengi-in-anyone/ https://www.thefandomentals.com/lets-unpack-this-star-trek-galactic-enterprises-unboxing/
