Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

I really like the theme and a lot of the gameplay elements. I really wish they would have done a better job with the rulebook and maybe a more concise summary.

Rules are so complex and fiddly, I have to CONSTANTLY refer to the (less than well organized) rulebook for clarifications. The rules simply aren't intuitive (or thematic) and just never seem to click with me. Frustratingly, I don't think it's possible for me to play this w/o making frequent rule mistakes as a result. Player aids on the cards are definitely nice, but not enough for me to avoid having to refer to the rulebook. Most of the components are OK, but the map tiles are too thin (and tend to warp) and the data tokens are some the cheapest components that I've ever seen in a board game. Definitely not a "pretty" game either with low quality clip art on the cards (looks like VHS screencaps with no contrast or color correction) and lackluster graphic design. No asymmetry in the different races you can play as the cards are all the same (other than the captain cards). so that aspect doesn't help replayability. If Mage Knight shares the same DNA with this game, I can't understand how it is often rated so highly for solo. There's MANY other games that I prefer for solo over this.

Star Trek summer of gaming is well on its way!!! Great fun, very thematic and easier than Mk, a bonus ( for me).
