The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Haha; I'm bitter that preordering this expansion caused my order with two other preordered games to be cancelled after a 2 month wait. Greater Than Games fulfilled kickstarter using retail copies, which meant two months after the release date, CSI still did not have the game. I guess they also no longer had my other two games since they switched to TCGs only while I was waiting. All the time Amazon had Nature Incarnate and I passed on several opportunities to buy the other games as well.

I feel like this is an overly harsh rating, but this expansion feels primarily like more content for an already incredibly content-laden game. That being said, the new content is incredibly fun, so I don't have too much buyer's remorse. This is one of the only games I've ever bought new, which is probably part of my critical perspective.

I'd love this expansion, Spirit Island is one of my favourite games, and I'm definitely going to buy it, but when it's at a FAIR price... there is no incentive* to back this instead of buying it when it's retail and just base pledge level is $55 adding the minimum shipping of $26... means $81, for just an expansion!. *Quantity of stuff wise, this MAY be about the same as Jagged Earth (NI contains less spirits, scenarios and adversaries than JE but has new Incarna mechanic and more aspects) costs about the same, BUT before delivery. I truly know there's more in a board game than just the bits, and there's supposed to be little publishers can do about shipping costs and nothing to do with tax, but the cost vs content/benefit for backing is so disappointing :( Just overall there appears to be no added benefit (only foil spirit panels, that enough people didn't want GTG had to later include an addon to remove them) vs cost of going in on this before retail, especially when factoring in the hefty delivery charge... To illustrate this: I just pre-ordered Horizons of Spirit Island (previously Target exclusive standalone expansion) for a fiver less (INCLUDING delivery) than what's being asked for as an addon in the BK campaign.
