Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration.Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

The first thing to note about Small World Realms is that the set up is very fiddly. It almost took as long to set up and take down as to play. And for the play, the rules tend toward concise, which can be frustrating ("follow the rules for rivers in Underground" - um, excuse me, I don't own Underground!). But once you get rolling, I think the actual change to the game play is quite fun. Having map based considerations after the first turn is really interesting.

I haven't actually played this yet, but since I love Small World so much and want to integrate Underground with the Classic, I'll be pulling this out soon to play it and see how the variances work. Wish me luck!

I really like what this brings to the Small World experience and only wish i had more chances to play Small World so I could try more options this book lays out.
