Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

I don't like games with semi cooperative elements like this. It's annoying to play cooperative against necromancer and at the same time try to beat other players. At least it should be very clear to all players what are the objectives and goals.

Necromancer Island is a novel idea, and I can certainly see the appeal for a change of pace, but with all of the available expansions that already exist to simply add new races and powers to the game, I'm much happier just playing vanilla Small World.

This expansion is ideal for public gameplay. One of the (few) drawbacks of the main game, Smallworld, is that once you start a game nobody can walk up and join. (Because the number of players determines which game board is used--you would have to upset the entire gameboard and start all over, just to include a new player.) As a game group host, this expansion is invaluable, because I can shift over to the Necromancer and give the walk-up player my race. This allows me to still be in the game rather than taking a less-fun advisory role to the beginning players. Meanwhile the new player has a good start and a chance to learn as he watches others who have already had the rules explained to them. "Dealing in" a new player is genius. Nice work DOW!
