Skytear Horde (Kickstarter – Gameplay All-In Pledge)
1 - 3 Players
Ages 10+
The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.

EDIT: Upped the rating after some recent plays. Also, expansion is confirmed to be added to Kickstarter later this year. Fun solo experience with a lot of initial replayability. I had a blast all the way from learning to play up to taking on the highest difficultly challenges with a custom-built deck. I think anyone that is into CCGs will enjoy what this game has to offer. That being said, the out-of-the-box rulebook needs some serious work and the creators are actively working on an FAQ and revised rulebook to help with the issues that you will inevitably run into when learning how to play. Deck building is limited by the Castles that you choose, so each deck you build has to be paired with a specific castle. This does help with keeping the game balanced but takes away from the customizable aspect, and I felt the game was nudging me in certain directions as I tried to build my own decks. Gotta be honest, it does feel amazing when you get off a custom-built combo to swing the game back in your favor and make the carefully planned decisions necessary to 'bend but not break' until you get the combo off. However, once you get on top of the horde you will likely just be riding the aftermath of the swing play to the finish line, and the finish doesn't feel as satisfying as the climax. I will say that when the expansion is released I will 100% be getting it because the bones of the game are very strong and it just needs that extra push.

I really wanted to like this. I mean, it's not bad, but it feels like a less interesting Lord of the Rings LCG, with less combos, more fiddliness and more tokens (as if it were possible), which ruins the mood for the whole "quick setup/quick play" concept, making it a pain to play :( The artwork and mechanisms are solid, but Skytear's worldbuilding is so uninspired that almost makes me forget that I'm playing an LCG. And this is bad news, because traditional TCGs/LCGs are almost all fluff and theme, and that's why they work so well. Here, I don't "feel" as if I'm summoning allies, nor using them to fight or defend a base. In hindsight, retail price was ok, but the kickstarter was too expensive for what came in the base package. It's such a shame, this game could've been a masterpiece. But I guess card games are difficult to do, and that's why so few stick around.
