Scholars of the South Tigris
60m - 90m
1 - 4 Players
Ages 12+
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Very solid game but not one I need to own. Its rhythm felt a lot like Paladins to me, but thats ok as I really like Paladins. The translation mechanic could be a bit cumbersome, and the travel mechanic felt tacked on for me as did the control of the towers. However everything else was good. I'd also prefer the longer game to the shorter game as the shorter game just felt too short for my tastes. There is also a bit of luck with how the the cards come out and how things line up with your starting card, but not so much that I really minded it.

Scholars is probably the heaviest Garphill game to date, but its weight is due to the sheer difficulty of choices rather than a complex rules set: it only has four different actions available, after all. As usual with Garphill, I find the rulebook fine but not exceptional: the rules are there, but the way they organize them makes always something harder than necessary to understand… Anyway, Scholars is a charming game, with an unusual theme and an awesome dice-based action selection. It works, it’s fun to play and it is deep!

Whew, probably the heaviest design from this team yet. So many options available it's easy to get lost. And while it's bordering complicated for the sake of it, I find it more intriguing than Wayfarers. Doubt I'll ever get particularly 'good' at it though!
