Simple rules but very strategic. An abstract at heart, with gorgeous components. God powers recommended, as the base game is fairly bland. Best at 2 players.

Often I'll buy games to play with my nephews, three boys ages 6, 9, and 12. I picked up Santorini and tried with the six and nine year olds on separate occasions. While the theming of Santorini looks like it'd be a good fit for a 6 or 9 year old, I found it is essentially an abstract game and they didn't really respond to it nor want to play it again. I have since played it with older people and think it's a very good abstract. I haven't played any of the god powers and the shop owner at Cloud Cap said he plays it without those cards and prefers that approach. I like Santorini, from my limited experience playing it with young people, I'm starting to think it's not a kid's game. I'd be curious to see how it could be themed differently. Not one-is-better-than-another, but how chess sets can have so many different themes and yet it's all the same abstract game.
