Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Ruination delivers on its promise of maximum conflict. Even two player games involve settling fights every other turn. Though the dice-driven combat system is fun and feels unique, it’s also clunky and time consuming. No more than two players are ever involved in a conflict, so those without a dog in the fight are left out to watch. The artwork (from Roland’s Revenge) is splendid and the production is solid. Still, Ruination feels more like a good swing than a base hit.
Vantastic
Has some really interesting ideas for a hybrid area control game. One thing I need to decide on is whether a player that pulls ahead can be slowed down—usually they have the resources and cards to take advantage of even losing battles to maintain a lead. Will have to see how things go with more experience.
The Innocent
Although its post-apocalyptic veneer is appropriately shiny and chrome, Ruination draws from the best of the genre... and loses the competition. Read my review here: https://spacebiff.com/2021/10/04/ruination/
