Root: The Marauder Expansion – All the New Stuff! Pledge Contents:
Root: The Marauder Expansion introduces two new factions and new gameplay options:
• Lord of the Hundreds is both charismatic and terrifying. He rules over a vast horde of warriors recently arrived to the woodland and is interested only in its domination. To help speed his conquest, he lights massive fires which can spread throughout the woods and destroy the buildings of other factions. The Lord also interacts with crafted items, which he can plunder from players. These items increase his strength, but also cause him to develop an increasingly fearsome monomania.
• The Keepers in Iron are strangers to the Woodland, here only to recover the scattered and lost relics of an ancient civilization. The Keepers work to establish way-stations across the woodland and form alliances with other factions in hopes of recovering their relics more quickly. They will often find themselves deep within enemy territory as they search for their relics. Thankfully their finely crafted armor makes them difficult to dislodge.
Both of these factions are suitable to Root’s two-player game, bringing the total number of two-player factions up to five without the use of bots.
Root: The Marauder Expansion also introduces a new level to the conflict for the woodland: Hirelings! These small factions can be used at any player count and introduce surprising new power combinations as well as a chess-like tension to lower player count games of Root.
Finally, The Marauder Expansion also includes a new set-up draft system suitable for both casual and competitive play.

I really like Root, and this expansion is also good, but very few games demand more work from their players to suss out rules and rule exceptions than these games, and I had hoped that by this expansion this would not be as much of an issue. Additionally, I am at a bit of a loss as to how this is supposed to be good for two players, as the keepers in iron have to interfere with the lord of hundreds if they want to stand a chance, but interfering gets you no points and can put you out of position. So one player has to try to actively work against another while also working on their own distinct strategy, and the other player just gets to coast along. And the theming of the keepers of iron is not strong at all. Face down tokens.... for what? Other than slamming your engine to a grinding halt, when you flip over a token you can be down to a coin flip of the value on it, and if you choose wrong, your whole engine could be ruined. And then the lord of hundreds just gets to keep going. I will not play Root at two ever again really.

Just started with, but a bit skeptical. The hirelings seem like a bust - a lot of complexity and randomness for extremely limited gaming value payoff, the first bit of Root paraphernalia that just seems bad. I’m not exactly sure who the “advanced” setup serves or what problem it was trying to solve. The Lords are a wrecking ball, trivial to play and able to wreck people pretty easily, and not super coherent thematically. I’m not sure I even understand the Keepers. I haven’t rated this yet because I’m not that deep into it; I’m seeing some red flags, but a little more time will tell for sure. I always figured Root was going to be in trouble the further away it got from Cole Wehrle; the rest of the Leder crew are pretty dim bulbs. So I was kind of shocked at how good Underworld was; that expansion really made the game for me, and its quality was apparent even on just one play. This one? Not so much.

Probably my favorite expansion yet. I love the hirelings and the two factions added are a lot of fun.
