The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

As much as I loved the base game, I cannot recommend this at the $40 price point due to the lack of actual content that it adds. Each backstory adds 4 moments during a campaign that each contain a few minutes worth of reading, but it runs parallel to the core gameplay. There are interesting story choices to make that affect your alignment, but there are no additional thematic skill checks/combats to do, which means the events depicted just sort of happen to you in a detached way. There's plenty of content here as it covers all 40+ backstories available for your characters, but the content is too shallow to really be considered "necessary" to get the full RPA experience. The conclusion for each backstory is only about 3 sentences of flavor text.

Nefras's Judgement was a nice additional to this RPG; I preordered it with my base game without doing any real research because I love Thunderworks's offerings and was expecting a couple more adventures in there, maybe a few new maps, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the content was more about character development (always a hit for this TTRPGer) and fleshing out the choices they make. I really appreciated that they brought in the backstory and alignment and made it a worthy little ...side quest? ...parallel quest? to sort through. The dual-alignment structure, along with the well-thought stories that accompanied LITERALLY EVERY ALIGNMENT CARD AVAILABLE makes for a heavy tome and some really interesting storytelling. The rewards at the end for your final alignment also seriously helped in the last adventure and finale. Bravo! Can we get a side/parallel expansion that highlights our relationships with the familiars, or perhaps the fiends on our shoulders? Reserving a star to see how this plays out with my game group - we have been quarantined for several weeks due to a case of covid in the house, even from our bubble. Will update!
