Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

8- based on 2 two-player plays. This is not a fast game, nor fast to learn. There is a natural progression, from bringining in Settlers, to housing them, instilling them in various Guilds, then promoting them to Master Artisans. This might feel limiting to some, but I enjoyed the progression and the theme comes through naturally and is well done. I anticipate additional plays will lead to a tight balance between when to go for influence in the council vs. continuing to house settlers and build buildings. I enjoy how you have two economies, money and goods. I hope it is not too slow in multiplayer - I will endeavor to find out this month. I just learned Cavern Tavern, and would say this is the slightly heavier older cousin to that game.

Pros: It's fun! Works great as a 2-player game Very re-playable... Every game will be different Cons: Complicated to learn Very little player interaction

Very thematic (although generic) and complex dice placement game with multiple variants plus a good solo mode. Has a lot of rules to it that are hard to remember though.
