This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
This mechanic usually requires players to pick up an item or good at one location on the playing board and bring it to another location on the playing board. Initial placement of the item can be either predetermined or random. The delivery of the good usually gives the player money to do more actions with. In most cases, there is a game rule or another mechanic that determines where the item needs to go.
Pick-up and Deliver
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Played with four players. This map is perfect for this number; just enough competition for links. Better map than the original. Update - I must now drop this in my ratings as I have found that I like Steam better.

Mar-07-2008 This map is so much better than the original RRT map. I actually enjoyed it very much. I would actually purchase this game if I don't have to invest in Railroad Tycoon. I think it would be smart for FRED to republish RRT with this map instead. The board is still pretty big but less dead space in RRT. I like that the all the major lines are available from the very beginning. Everyone knows what they are from the very beginning and can plan accordingly. Major lines are still a huge and important part of any strategy since you get rewarded/paid for building your infrastructure that you should be doing anyways. This still bothers me as in RRT but less so in this game. They removed the card that gives you one extra action, which I have always hated. They cleaned up the rules for river building by adopting the rule from Age of Steam. They put the dots on mountain hexes to avoid any confusion. The map is tighter so that people are in everyone's face right away. That is if you build in central Europe, which you should do since that is where most of the goods are. The colors of cities are still a problem. This is exacerbated by the highly shiny gloss coat on the board. Rating: 8

Dumbed down version of Age of Steam with more luck courtesy of several decks of cards, and less agonising decisions courtesy of all actions being available to all players. Still a fine game - I like how the VP/income track works in this version. Typically vulgar Eagle Games design aesthetic.
