Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

The central mechanism of the Architects limiting both selection and placement is very cool. The game contains two versions (called Classic and Expert), but they're not simply a more complex version of the other: they each have their strengths. Classic is more about blocking one another, almost worker-placement-y in its feel of quickly diminishing options; Expert is more about the optimization of your personal board. In the end, I wish there was a way to have the strengths of both in the same game, as they don't seem mutually exclusive: that would push it up to a 9.

An amazing tile laying game about building cities with a unique mechanic. Many different ways to score and win.

Interesting game, definitely needs spatial awareness and planning, but should be fine if you just want to wing it and see what happens. Turns out, my family really enjoys this game, after it sat unplayed for a year and thus was put up on the sale block. And when it was sold, we played it on its way out. While we both enjoyed it a lot, it wasn't something we felt we needed to keep over other games.
