I shall start with the most notable feature of the game which is the marble dispenser. This is a really cool piece of boardgame componentry. It is exciting, novel, fun and offers a push your luck element to the game. To me it is a reason (perhaps THE reason) to play Potion Explosion. Otherwise the game revolves around gathering resources (marbles) and turning these resources to victory points (brewing potions) which is a true and tested concept for a boardgame. Some strategic depth is introduced via the special actions you get from the potions because each potion allows you to break the rules in some way. Since these are one time effects only, most important decisions are taken on the tactical level, i.e., spotting the best opportunities to claim a loads of resources and denying your opponents the very ones they would have needed to finish their potions. One more thing worth noting about the mechanics is that the game can be easily stalled if there are AP prone people in the table. This is because, there is a lot of choice in triggering the marble cascades (especially after acquiring a few special actions from the potions). Visually the game is rather busy with its rich colour palette and detailed art. This causes the essential information to sometimes escape the eye at first, but you’ll get used to this after some time.

1st play: Fun game if a bit light. The balls clacking down in bejeweled fashion is cool and the game is straightforward. I enjoyed myself playing this, but the game might be more setup than the weight/depth of the game needs to be. Also, there was a decent amount of downtime between turns. On further plays it might be faster to set-up and play, and then this game would make for a nice filler. 2nd play: Played again, with 2 this time and the game is better. Turns are fun and the potions allow creative combos. Unique explosion mechanic and good production. Pleasant experience each time I've played.
