Peloponnes Card Game
45m - 45m
2 - 5 Players
Ages 10+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting

Playing with the solo variant. It plays surprisingly well, with difficult decisions about which card to buy each turn. The 'dummy player' builds up a score and presents a real challenge. Thumbs up from me! However, the rulebook was not easy to read and work out what was going on.

If you own the board game and have invested in and enjoy all the expansions and like the added flexibility of playing with more than five then this card game isn’t going to replace the original. If you do not have the board game then the card game makes an ideal cost and space effective introduction to Peloponnese in a handy sized box (the non-standard size of the original box still niggles me a little). The card game has the same great auction system and fluid, quick game play, indeed it has so many similarities with its older brother that I personally question the need to hold on to both. Which one I will keep I am still debating, but the added portability and streamlining means that at the moment I am leaning towards the card game.

If you can get your head around it and don't mind math it's a great game. There is an official solo variant too. All the info is in the rulebook but information is spread out in it which makes it more difficult to understand than it should be. I wrote 2 pages of notes to put all relevant information together. You try to puzzle out how to mitigate the disasters while staying ahead of your opponent. The solo mode also allows you to manipulate the AI.
