Peak Oil

2 - 5 Players
Ages 10+
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Across the Rhine
Essen 2017 - on my radar when I arrived the demo and the retro future style graphics won me over. Not sure how much play it will get in my group but I imagine resale will be good.

The game has a nice, clean graphic design. The components are just right for the game. I would suggest that the board could be a bit larger or maybe a better border design. I think making it a double sided board for different player counts could be a big plus. The game has some interesting decisions as you try and time your moves correctly. It is vital that you plan ahead as you can only do so much with your two decisions each turn. With the "re-assign" action, you are basically setting yourself up for what you hope to do the next turn. While that gives others a chance to get in your way. There is one action that I'm aware of that lets you move and take an action in the same turn. I think there is a good bit of re-playability with the different consultant cards that come out each game. There is also a lot of player interaction as you are constantly getting in each others' way as you battle for territory control. A problem I found with the game is the initial card that each player gets, that list their "hidden" company ownership has three of the four. I think this should maybe be two out of the four at most. Otherwise, there is just very little difference among the players. I liked the game but I didn't love the game.

Played with 4. Very nice worker-placement/area control/economic game. The consistent theming and visual style pull it all together. What I liked: - theme, visual style - blocking aspect of taking actions - game length of about 90 minutes with 4 new people, would be shorter on subsequent plays - the way the risky options work requiring bag pulls - the black market and either moving those barrels to the oil fields, or to the technologies What I didn't care for: - Component quality is generally good with the barrels and the board, but the cards are flimsy and the box seems thin. - Economy is very tight, for much of the game, most people had at most 2-3 barrels, if any. With a limited amount of oil in the economy, there wasn't a lot that would be extracted and so I didn't have a lot of options for investing in start-ups Variants: - To boost the amount of oil in the game, using some of the extra barrels that came with it, in addition to the normal setup of drawing 1 card per player and adding 2 barrels to those fields, I would also add 1 barrel to all fields to make some of them more in play earlier. - Peak Oil phase is a little wonky. There is a definite disadvantage to being just to the right of the player that triggered Peak Oil. You go last in any spots where you are tied. One of the developers posted a comment that he originally had an idea where once Peak Oil was triggered, the game would play as normal, but when you took an action you removed your agents not to your HQ but to the box. When you had no more agents you were skipped. Once all the agents were in the box, move on to end game scoring. While you could, in theory, get to a point where no one wants to take an action, this would allow more people to invest in technologies or start-ups. - Stalemate variant (as suggested by a player aid): at the start of a turn you can take an action at an action spot that has 5 agents, you must take an action there (with or without risk). UPDATE: with the just announced Spillover expansion, it looks like there are a few variants you can play with that change up different aspects of the game, one of which is the above mentioned Peak Oil variant where you keep playing as normal until everyone has no more workers around. That is right up my alley.
