Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Great, under-appreciated game with a satisfying mix of control, adapting, planning, and dealing with unexpected cards. The design is really tight with some very intriguing choices. Goes up in my esteem each time I play it!

An interesting attempt at mixing deck building with area control, but it just didn’t work for me. Too much luck in the card draw and dice rolling plus having to pick a strategy right from the start of cruel or merciful seemed at odds with how the game played out. I was told black cards were good for a cruel strategy but ended up drawing 2 the whole game. I should have known that dice rolling for combat would be bad as if is never my speciality either. Happy to have tried it but not one for me.

There's a little bit of frustrating randomness in what you get and some opaque strategy, but I enjoyed the interplay between the conquering and the deck building. I just wish the morality track...did something
