In Action Point (AP) Allowance System games, each player is allotted a certain amount of points per round. These points can be spent on available actions, until the player does not have enough remaining to "purchase" any more actions.
Action Point Allowance System
Co-operative play encourages or requires players to work together to beat the game.
Cooperative Play
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Games with partnerships offer players a set of rules for alliances and teams. Partners are often able to win as a team, or penalties are enforced for not respecting alliances
Partnerships

A must-have expansion, mainly because it's an excellent storage solution for both itself and the base game. The extra roles will also always be appreciated.

The new roles are a must-have - they breathe new life into the game! But for me the variants are not needed - too much of a bother to flesh out new rules with no real increase in fun (just confusing). The Mutation Challenge is a challenge - we lost 2 of 2 on Normal, we are considering playing it on Easy. This variant is cool though, since it brings more city infection cards into play (and into the discard pile). The Bio-Terrorist challenge is a bit lame - we'd rather play Scotland Yard. Still need to try the Virulent Strain challenge (eventually, getting kind of bored with expansions). Overall, the only reason to get this expansion if you are expansion-weary is the cool bits (plastic storage containers!) and maybe the new role cards. The rest is annoying and not really non-gamer friendly if your friends get bored by complexity and longer games. The other downside is that I can't fit the expansion into the original box! Drat!

This is the kind of expansion that I generally think is poorly done. The designer throws a bunch of options in a box for you and asks you to sort them out on your own. These always lead to the inevitable pre-game confusion while everyone asks the same "How are we going to play" question. The obvious additions: - A 5th player - More roles - More event cards All of these additions work exactly the way you'd expect they would. The event cards are the only one you have to watch out for since you should only have a total of two cards per player. So you have to mix all the event cards and then discard some to get to the proper number. The interesting but not too useful for me: - 5th nasty disease - New level of difficulty - Changing one current disease so it behaves differently. All of these basically make the game harder. I haven't played Pandemic enough or even a decent number of times with the same people to have experienced anything beyond Normal level. The chances of getting to any of these any time soon is pretty slim. The semi coop variant: - The terrorist Makes the game kind of like Scotland Yard in a way. That's not necessarily a bad thing since I like the one against the many aspect of Scotland Yard. So if you rarely play with more than 4 players, have a hard time beating the game as it is and already own Scotland Yard then this is an expansion you might be able to skip. But overall it's not a bad expansion.
